Retirement Overview

Greater Hattiesburg, a distinguished retirement destination, is known for its low cost of living, quick access to New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, coupled with great schools, engaging area attractions and recreational activities. A thriving healthcare system, educational institutions of higher learning and strong military presence make Hattiesburg a fabulous place to live, work and play.

The area offers several amenities and programs geared specifically for retirees such as Senior Fair and Senior Prom.  However, one of the most popular educational activities for retirees comes through the University of Southern Mississippi’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI); an association of active men and women 50 years of age or older who seek to explore stimulating learning experiences while developing new friendships.  Housed just off campus, OLLI offers a relaxed setting for sharing learning experience with friends old and new without the pressure of exams or grades. The institute, now almost 500 members, is run by the members who select courses and approve the instructors. OLLI also schedules a number of special-interest classes and trips throughout the year.
