2008 Program of Work

Partnership for a Better Tomorrow

Partnership for a Better Tomorrow is the Area Development Partnership’s third capital campaign.  It is an ambitious five-year economic and community development initiative. The ADP’s 2008 Program of Work addresses the six issues identified in the campaign’s strategic plan.

Chamber of Commerce Division

Objective:  Support the ADP in the retention of existing members and recruitment of former members; welcome new members; and represent the ADP at various functions and events.

- Welcome new businesses to the area as future investors.             
- Participate in quarterly membership development campaigns.
- Conduct periodic surveys of ADP investors.

Beautification & Aesthetics

Business Advisory Committee

Objective:  Explore and pursue ways to assist and support ADP business members.

- Develop seminars relative to ADP members’ needs.
- Provide links to online resources of interest to business owners.
- Partner with William Carey College to present the Annual Small Business Leadership Award Luncheon.

 Business After Hours

Business After Hours

Objective:  Provide an event each month that allows members to network in a casual setting at a member’s location of choice.

- Provide an opportunity for a sponsor to showcase his/her business to the ADP’s membership-at-large.
- Promote event and sponsor through various ADP publications.
- Enhance level of networking activities at each event.

Community Outreach

Objective:  Create and maintain a positive and productive advisory working relationship between the ADP and communities located in Lamar County and the City of Petal.  Work with communities to promote, enhance and develop plans for special events and promotions.

- Assist leaders in Purvis, Lumberton and Sumrall in developing programs/events to benefit that area.
- Assist with the planning of festivals, grand openings, and promotional materials for these communities.

Education Committee

Objective:  Develop and enhance partnerships between ADP member businesses and area schools.

- Plan/implement the Educators in Business and Industry program that allows area educators to experience first hand the employment needs of local business and industry.
- Develop and coordinate an appreciation event or program for area educators in 2006.
- Update/revise ADP Speaker’s Bureau Booklet.
- Seek ways to involve the business community with area schools.

Festival Organizational Committee

Arts and Heritage Festival

Objective: Organize and implement one festival in the Greater Hattiesburg Area: Arts Heritage Festival of South Mississippi.

- Provide sponsorship opportunities for businesses to showcase their organization while supporting festival events. 
- Increase the number of booths and attendance.
- Incorporate new ideas into the festivals to expand and enhance the event.

First Friday

Objective:  Provide a networking event each month for ADP members featuring programs of interest to the membership.

- Plan/organize an early morning networking event the first Friday of each month at the Hattiesburg Lake Terrace Convention Center.
- Seek a variety of local, state and national speakers that provide information of interest to members.
- Provide businesses with sponsorship opportunities to showcase their goods and/or services.

Leadership Pinebelt (Leaders For A New Century)

Leadership Pinebelt

Objective:  Annually develop and cultivate 20 emerging community leaders who dedicate themselves to the betterment of the Greater Hattiesburg Area of Forrest, Lamar and Perry counties and its citizens.

- Plan and implement program to educate class members on our area’s diverse economy and its needs.
- Select and train 20 individuals in the art of leadership and development of community projects.
- Assess program through class evaluations and alumni survey.

Legislative Action Team

Objective:  Maintain a positive and productive relationship between the ADP and all levels of government.  Keep members of the ADP abreast of government issues of significant interest to the business community.

- Coordinate bi-weekly updates during the 2006 legislative session to inform ADP members of current issues affecting their business and our community.
- Support and assist the ADP with important local, state and national issues as needed.
- Facilitate regional cooperation of area governments by building strategic alliances.
- Work with area governmental entities to become aware of current transportation plans and seek ways to serve as an advocate for the completion of plans.        -
- Plan/implement legislative appreciation day in Jackson with area legislators.

Medical Committee

Objective:  Seek ways to build on the success of the medical community and provide necessary support for continued growth.

- Develop promotional packages/video as needed to assist the medical community  in recruiting physicians.
- Inform government leaders of issues adversely impacting the medical community.

Membership Development Committee

Objective:  Increase membership investment through recruitment and education of new members.

- Coordinate and implement membership development events
- Solicit volunteers to help with membership development events.
- Host a New Member Orientation session each quarter and educate the members about ADP programs and benefits.

Military Relations

Leadership Pinebelt

Objective:  Keep abreast of the latest federal military activities and their impact on Camp Shelby. Provide support to local and visiting military units through appreciation events.

- Work with state and federal officials on military issues that could impact the military presence in Hattiesburg.
- Work with Washington-based consultants to ensure continued federal support for our area’s military base.
- Solicit sponsors to host military receptions during the summer months.

Operation Thank You Committee

Objective:  Organize an event to thank ADP members for their investment each year.

 - Assemble teams to personally visit and thank ADP members and provide them with an ADP “New Year Packet,” which includes a new 2006 Business Guide (Membership Directory), Membership Plaque Insert and Investor’s Report.

Pine Belt Expo

Objective:  Provide businesses a unique opportunity to market their programs, products, and services to a diverse audience of business people and the general public.

- Secure additional exhibitors and food vendors for the Expo and Taste of the Pine Belt.
- Continue to improve exhibitor participation.
- Develop ways to attract business representatives to the Expo.
- Consider other avenues to draw more attendance at the event such as a seminar.

Retirement

Objective:  Enhance the Greater Hattiesburg Area economy through recruitment of retiree households.

- Work through various means to identify retirees who have moved to the area.
- Plan/implement quarterly events to welcome new retirees and provide networking opportunities.
- Survey newly relocated retirees about their experiences in moving to the area.
- Call retirees and encourage them to visit and relocate to this area.
- Solicit stories about the area from national writers, editors and journalists through national travel shows, conferences, meetings and tours.

Economic Development Division

Existing Industry Appreciation Event Committee

Objective:  Hold spring event to salute local existing industries.

- Organize annual golf tournament.
- Organize Business After Hours for both golf tournament participants and ADP members.

Existing Industry

Objective:  Identify and explore ways to meet the needs of local manufacturing employers.

- Solicit feedback from existing industry through surveys and meetings with management.
- Sponsor training/seminars and information forums.
- Organize quarterly networking events.
- Conduct on-site visits.
- Provide assistance with existing industry expansions.

New Business Development

Objective:  Continue to create new jobs and new capital investment in/for the Greater Hattiesburg MSA.

- Implement integrated marketing plan.
- Work with Forrest County Industrial Park Commission, the Lamar County Economic Development District and Perry County Industrial Park to market available buildings and sites to industrial prospects.
- Facilitate networking events with economic development allies.
- Collaborate with Southern Miss in developing an Innovation and Commercialization Park.

Technology Development

Objective:  Create an environment that will attract, support and enhance technology-based companies.

- Conduct quarterly networking events for the I-59 MS Technology Corridor Council.
- Participate in activities supported by Mississippi Technology Alliance, CIT.MS, Mississippi Polymer Cluster Organization and the I-59 MS Technology Corridor Council.
- Identify opportunities for improving technology infrastructure.

Southeast Mississippi Community Investment Corporation (SEMCIC)

Objective:  Utilize available funding sources to initiate job creation, business creation and expansion and support of non-traditional business loan seekers, as well as the expansion of job opportunities for low and moderate income individuals.

- Effectively manage current loan portfolio.
- Continue to work with allies on the state and local level.
- Continue bi-annual site visits to current loan recipients.
- Provide funding opportunities for low and moderate income individuals.
