The University of Southern Mississippi

Higher Education

Hattiesburg is home of to The University of Southern Mississippi. Founded in 1910, the school was originally named Mississippi Normal College for teachers. The school went through several names but settled on the University of Southern Mississippi, chosen in 1962.

As Hattiesburg grew, so did the university. Southern Miss provides educational services to over 12,000 students on the Hattiesburg campus:

In addition, there are five teaching and research sites across south Mississippi as well as France, Mexico, England, and Spain. William Carey University, founded in 1906, was originally known as Mississippi Woman’s College. The name was changed in 1953 to William Carey College (WCC). WCU is a private nonprofit, 4 –year Baptist college, dedicated to providing liberal arts and professional education programs within a caring Christian community. The individual student is encouraged to develop his or her highest potential in scholarship, leadership and service.

Pearl River Community College (PRCC), founded in 1921, is located within 30 minutes of Hattiesburg. It is the oldest publicly-funded two-year institution of higher learning in the state and the 16th oldest in the nation.

PRCC also provides two campuses within the city limits located on Highway 49 South and The Lowery A. Woodall Advanced Technology Center located in the Industrial Park in south Hattiesburg. Their mission is to upgrade the quality of south Mississippi’s workforce to world-class standards. These campuses focus on special programs including: Industrial Maintenance, Computer Training, Computer Network Training, Emergency Medical Technician Basic Training and more.

K-12 – Public Schools

With an enrollment of over 500, the Forrest County Agricultural High School District, founded in 1912, consists of one school, which serves students in Grades 9-12.

The school offers a diverse curriculum in three areas: college preparatory, vocational/technical and agricultural. In addition to core courses like mathematics, science, literature and social studies, students can enroll in a two-year program in general drafting. Agri-science, an innovation program at Forrest County AHS, teaches students the science and technology behind agriculture including plant and animal science and environmental awareness. Classes in family and consumer science, foreign language and computer training are also offered. Forrest County AHS is one of only three agricultural high schools remaining in Mississippi.

Secondary students benefit from academic and extracurricular activities that provide challenging and rewarding experiences. Petal schools place a strong emphasis on reading through the use of a balanced approach to literacy. An Accelerated Reader Program has been instrumental in encouraging students to read. Reading labs, gifted studies program, and special educational programs make the school experience challenging and rewarding. Petal Middle School and High School offer a blend of college preparatory and Tech-Prep programs for its students. The core curriculum for high school students includes English, mathematics, science and social studies. Established in 1972, the school utilizes the A Beka Book Christian School Curriculum for students in Grades K-12. With a focus on preparing students for the future, Central Baptist School offers a college preparatory curriculum. Lamar Christian School is located in Purvis, in Lamar County, and has an attendance of 300+ students.
