With the
unveiling of the first 25 swan sculptures and the Swan Ball, the Pine Belt
Region has definitely been taken over with Swanmania!
It was an
exciting and proud day for the ADP when the first 25 swans were unveiled during
a much anticipated press conference at the Lake Terrace Convention Center on
March 21st. But this could not even compare to the joy that was felt
on the following day when the former first lady of the United States of America,
Mrs. Barbara Bush, attended the Forrest General Hospital’s Spirit of Women
conference at the Lake Terrace Convention Center, where she viewed and took
pictures with the swans.
The first 25
swans were on display throughout Easter weekend at the Lake Terrace Convention
Center lawn for the public to view, and since then have been moved to designated
locations chosen by the sponsors. The second series of 25 swan sculptures
arrived from Spain on Thursday, April 5th and were distributed to their sponsors
for painting. The second series of swans will be on display Thursday, April 26th through Sunday, May 13th (Mother's Day).
Nearly 400
patrons attended the Swan Ball held on April 3rd at the Lake Terrace
Convention Center as one of several ancillary events of the Festival of Swans.
It was a lovely evening of great food and entertainment. The black-tie gala
event featured swan-themed decorations, a silent auction of swan-themed
paintings by professional artists and musical entertainment by Gary Fields. The
first 24 swans were placed throughout the ball for patrons to view.
Congratulations
to Sally Sullivan for winning the raffle for the $750 value 14-carat gold and
diamond double swan pin-dant courtesy of Lights Jewelers Gemologists. Also,
congratulations to Alan Conley for winning the raffle for the $3,250 value swan
sculpture and the painting of the swan sculpture courtesy of the Hattiesburg
American.
A quality of
life initiative of the ADP, the Festival of Swans is an outdoor public arts
project which features large decorative sculptures of swans. The swan
sculptures measure approximately five feet long by five feet high by three and
one half feet wide in size, and will be on display throughout the duration of
2007.
A special
thanks to Women’s Services of Forrest General Hospital for being the presenting
